know thyself
I'm Jacob, a developer, husband, father, and some other stuff too
I'm an East Texas native. I wrote my first programs in TI-BASIC in Algebra II (probably should have been paying attention; sorry, Mrs. Cummings). I didn't have opportunity to pursue devlopment full-time until much later.
from seminary to source code
I went to Seminary at SWBTS and earned a master's degree with a concerntration in Christian ethics. That experience was incredibly valuable on almost every level, even development. I wrote my thesis entirely in markdown in Sublime Text (this was pre-VS Code, if you can believe it), and used pandoc to export it to administratively acceptable formats. I went through several methods of gathering research and still don't know what I prefer but I came away with a deep appreciation of plain text and basic tools.
After that I got the opportunity to work with one of my best friends at a local digital agency where I continued to build my development skills. An enormous amount of client support and debugging allowed me to get familiar with every level of the stack. A continual stream of site builds, rebuilds, and audits reinforced the value of speed and testing.
I'm always looking to learn new stuff and sharpen my skills.
If you want to know what I've done that's really valuable:
a life well-lived
It was 18 years and ... days ago that I married the best woman I have ever or will ever meet. If you ever think something good about me just know you have Christ and Colleen to thank.
